Minerals in Cacao Juice: The Measured Values

This article reports the mineral content of commercial cacao fruit juice as measured in GRAS Notice 947, and shows how to work out what one serving contains.

The measured values

Per 100 g of juice, as the mean of five samples:

  • Potassium: 202 mg.
  • Magnesium: 22 mg.
  • Calcium: 7.3 mg.
  • Sodium: 1 mg.

The notice also reports vitamin C below the limit of quantification (0.5 mg per 100 g), and describes the vitamin content of cacao pulp products as low. The juice supplies 83 kcal and 18.0 g of total sugars per 100 g.

What a serving contains

Our serving suggestion is 100 to 200 mL. The notice reports per 100 g, so we count 1 mL as about 1 g. Juice at 16 to 20 °Brix is slightly denser, so the true values are a little higher.

  • 100 mL: about 202 mg potassium, 22 mg magnesium, 7 mg calcium and 1 mg sodium.
  • 200 mL: about 404 mg potassium, 44 mg magnesium, 15 mg calcium and 2 mg sodium.

These are this site's own serving suggestions, not medical recommendations.

What we do not say

We do not set these values against other drinks, and we do not assign the minerals any role in the body. If you have been told to limit a mineral such as potassium, or you take medication, ask your doctor before adding a new drink to your diet.
